Get Started with Your Ledger Device
Welcome to the future of digital asset security. This guide will walk you through every step of setting up your new Ledger hardware wallet, ensuring your crypto is safe from day one.
Start Setup GuideYour Fortress for Digital Assets
Understand why a Ledger hardware wallet is the cornerstone of your crypto security strategy. In a world of digital threats, offline storage provides unparalleled protection.
What is a Hardware Wallet?
A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores your private keys in a secure, offline environment. This makes it impossible for hackers to access your funds remotely. Unlike software wallets that are connected to the internet and vulnerable to malware, a hardware wallet provides a robust barrier between your crypto and online threats. Your Ledger device acts as a digital vault, requiring physical confirmation for every transaction.
Why You Need One
If you own cryptocurrency, you are your own bank. This freedom comes with the responsibility of securing your assets. Leaving your crypto on an exchange means you don't truly own it—the exchange holds your keys. A hardware wallet puts you in complete control. It's an essential tool for anyone serious about protecting their investment from exchange hacks, phishing scams, and other online vulnerabilities.
Unmatched Security Benefits
Ledger devices are built on a custom operating system (BOLOS) and a Secure Element chip, the same kind used in passports and credit cards. This architecture ensures your private keys never leave the device. Every transaction is verified on the device's trusted display, protecting you from man-in-the-middle attacks. With a Ledger, you achieve true self-custody and peace of mind.
Your 5-Step Setup Guide
Follow these simple steps to get your Ledger device fully operational and your assets secured in minutes.
Unbox and Connect Your Device
Carefully unbox your new Ledger device. Inside, you will find the hardware wallet, a USB cable, and cards for writing down your recovery phrase. Use the provided cable to connect your device to your computer. The device will power on and display a welcome message. Follow the initial on-screen instructions to navigate using the two buttons.
Download and Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the essential application for managing your crypto with your device. It's your secure gateway to installing apps, checking your balance, and making transactions. Download it exclusively from the official Ledger website: ledger.com. Be extremely cautious of fake websites or unofficial sources. Install the application on your computer or smartphone.
Set Up Your Device and PIN
Open Ledger Live and follow the step-by-step instructions to set up your device as a new device. You will be prompted to choose a PIN code between 4 and 8 digits. This PIN is crucial for daily use; it unlocks your device and authorizes transactions. Choose a code you can remember but that is difficult for others to guess. Confirm it on your device.
Write Down Your Recovery Phrase
This is the most critical step. Your device will display a unique 24-word recovery phrase. Write down each word carefully and in the correct order on the provided recovery sheets. This phrase is the only backup of your private keys. If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore your funds on a new device using this phrase. Store it in a secure, offline location. Never store it digitally.
Install Apps and Manage Crypto
With your device set up, you can now use Ledger Live to install applications for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). Each crypto has its own small app. Once installed, you can create accounts, receive funds to your secure address, and send transactions, which you will always need to physically confirm on your Ledger device. Your setup is now complete!

Security Best Practices
Owning your keys means taking security seriously. Follow these essential rules to keep your assets safe.
Never Share Your Recovery Phrase
Your 24-word recovery phrase is the master key to all your crypto assets. Anyone with access to it can steal your funds. Never enter it into any website or application. Ledger will never ask for it. Store your physical copy securely.
Verify Addresses on Your Device
When receiving crypto, always verify that the address shown in Ledger Live matches the one displayed on your Ledger device's screen. This protects you from malware on your computer that could try to change the address.
Keep Your Firmware Updated
Always install the latest firmware for your Ledger device via Ledger Live. Updates contain important security enhancements and new features. This ensures your device has the most up-to-date protection against potential vulnerabilities.
Beware of Phishing Attempts
Scammers may impersonate Ledger support via email, social media, or direct messages. They often create a sense of urgency to trick you into revealing your recovery phrase. Remember: Ledger support will never ask for your 24 words.
